It was easy, fast, free, and it made a distinctive picture that C3D can't make. I imported a C3D model into SketchUp to export a 'cartoon' render.

Have any of you done this? It would be great if you could just drop a C3D model into the free version and hit the Render button for this effect.

I don't have any experience with SketchUp but I believe both the free and Pro ($700) versions import 3ds files and have a range of black and white outline render options.

I personally decided to limit myself to two CG programs for the sake of simplicity, Photoshop and C3D, so I don't want to use Blender. So, 20 years later, it seems like it should be possible to add this feature to C3D. I can't attach an example because I no longer have any of those files, and a Google Image search came up empty. You could scale it up and get very precise pictures. Unlike with Cheetah 3D Wireframe or Toon materials, objects were solid, not transparent, and the lines were uniform vectors, i.e. I used inexpensive Virtus VR software to make simplified 3D models of architectural interiors that, in addition to quickly making fly-through animations on slow Mac computers, had the option of rendering black outline on white background pictures.
